The High-level Ministerial Meeting was organized as a side-event of the Global South-South Development Expo 2017, in the framework of the partnership initiative on South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Agricultural Development and Enhanced Food Security (SSTC-ADFS). The partnership initiative is supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the United Nations Office for South‐South Cooperation (UNOSSC).
Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director, UNOSSC, highlighted the importance of the initiative and its role in advancing SSTC as a tool in combatting extreme poverty in rural areas and enhanced food security by increasing agricultural production.
High-level participants and representatives of the ministries of agriculture of Algeria, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkey and Uzbekistan examined the progress made by their respective Ministries, and experessed their willingness to continue the partnership within the SSTC-ADFS partnership initiative and its next phase. They discussed the practical ways to further promote the achievements of home-grown solutions in the thematic areas covered by the partnership initiative, such as management of farmer-based organizations, effective water resources management, agricultural biotechnology, livestock and horticulture development, and others.
Ms. Dina Saleh, Country Manager in Turkey, IFAD, pronounced the role IFAD plays in mainstreaming youth employment across its portfolio. Ms. Saleh commended that South-South and triangular cooperation acts as a mechanism to better respond to the challenges of rural youth employment through capacity-building and exchange of best practices on youth-sensitive initiatives.
Mr. Mansur Muhtar, Vice President, Sector Operations, Capacity Development Department, IsDB, reaffirmed the commitment of IsDB to foster South-South cooperation through introducing the concept of reverse linkage. Mr. Muhtar concluded that he looks forward to future collaboration at the policy level in order to increase the ownership and leadership of countries within the framework of the SSTC-ADFS partnership initiative.
